Best Hair Color Specialist in Dallas

by: Rebecca Downs

News flash….One of the industry’s leading hair color experts – straight from Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills –  has come to Dallas! Celebrity colorist and stylist CalMartini can now be found at the elegant Michael Flores Salon, located on the 6th floor of Neiman Marcus Dallas, its flagship store.

Cal’s superpower is Red Carpet-ready hair color, and his impressive roster of celebrity clientele includes Rene RussoMarcia Cross, and Evan Rachel Wood.

But you don’t need to be a celebrity to enjoy superb results when you sit in Cal’s chair. Whether you  are new to coloring and highlighting your hair or a seasoned salon enthusiast, collaborating with an artist like Cal can be a great adventure.

Is your style cutting edge or classic? Do you love bold splashes of color or subtle, dimensional highlights?

Your hair reflects who you are. Every new fashion season is a new opportunity to up your hair game. Cal has spent decades experimenting with color, helping his clients achieve their most perfect hue.  He recognizes that your hair will define your look every day and he has made it his mission to take his client’s hair to the next level. From show stopping highlights to complete hair color transformation Cal Martini is always on top of the latest trends and techniques.

More fun and more fundamental than a great pair of shoes or a new “little black dress”  having gorgeous and on trend hair will impact your look and style every single day. Remember “chocolate dipped blondes”? Now “grown out roots” take that trend and reverse it.  How about chunky streaks? Now we have half and half hair color, a level up from chunky streaks. We all loved Ombre. Yet now we have so many specific versions of balayage it’s hard to keep up.  And if your colorist is not a hair color specialist they may not have had the time to be up on the latest trends and technologies either.

You don’t need to go to extremes to make your hair on trend, (although you certainly can, with excellent results whether you are in Dallas or Beverly Hills!) But for most of us, what we need is a hair color specialist who blends cutting edge hair technologies with impeccable taste.

We need a hair colorist who loves our hair, who loves to make us beautiful. Need your roots done? Cal Martini’s painstaking method of painting the roots a little at a time means you never have dye build up. It means your hair lasts longer between color appointments. And the result is a color blend that is so perfect, so seamless, all anyone sees is enviably beautiful hair.

Another unique technique that Cal uses to keep your hair color looking rich and lustrous is glossing the ends of the hair with a sheer glaze. It catches the light and enhances color, without adding to build-up or damaging the ends.

Cal Martini’s exacting celebrity clientele need to look flawless from every angle.  And he brings that same perfectionism to every person who sits in his chair.

In fact, Cal Martini will always offer you far more than just trend, because it isn’t enough to know what hair color trend is hot. Cal knows how to make YOU look hot. And that’s what it’s all about.

Best Hair Color Results in Dallas.

Best Hair Color Results in Dallas.

Most women believe that they will get the best hair color results  in salons in Beverly Hills, Dallas, or New York because these are the cities that attract the best and most talented colorists, and although I do agree , I also know that the city does not guarantee quality, the salon does.  Great colorists combine knowledge and expertise, and because they are in the business, they also get the low-down on the most cutting edge products and processes.  In addition color results in Beverly Hills, Dallas and New York will be among the best because these are the US cities where cutting edge fashion rules.  So not only does this result in the best hair color and the best hair color application, you also have access to what is in style now.   You have access to colorists who suggest multiple shades of layered color while elsewhere women just like you are still getting yesterday’s style of streaks n’ tips (well, actually I hope that is not true,) no-one should be getting THAT kind of horrible advice except maybe the woman that is trying to steal your man.

So let’s start with knowledge of product.  There are new products coming on the market all of the time, and stylists know better than to just rush out and get whatever is hot without carefully vetting each and every color, down to the smallest details.  For example Cal Martini uses a new line of hair color created by the queen of hair color, Beth Minardi.  He knows how beautifully it goes on, the many properties it has that make it a cut above even the best of previous hair color product lines, he has tested out each and every shade of the new color line in-house, to make sure he can accurately predict how it will work on an individual client’s head of hair.

The best hair color results depend upon chemistry, and the secret to consistently great results knows all of the factors that can alter the chemistry and affect hair color outcomes. This is just a tiny window in to what it takes to be a cutting edge salon.  Your ear is to the  ground.  You are in the center of fashion and the film industry.  You are expected to come up with great red-carpet looks week after week, month after month.  And at the same time, while offering your clients the best and the newest in fashion, you also protect them from the pitfalls and disasters that could be the result of taking chances with your hair color.  You do your homework, use your expertise and the result is one gorgeous head of hair after another.

Cal Martini is at:  “Michael Flores Salon.”  1618 Main Street Floor 6, in downtown Dallas Texas.     (214) 573-2626            Book online:

2014 was OMBRE – 2015 is SOMBRE!

2014 was OMBRE – 2015 is SOMBRE!

Are you looking to update your tired #Ombrehaircolor with #Sombrehair- the trending hair color of 2015?  That’s right – exit Ombre hair – enter Sombre hair!  Finally something new on the haircolor and hair styling scene! Top Beverly Hills colorists like Cal Martini     who loads his Paint brushes with #Beth MinardisSignature fresh new shades and tones down his client’s high contrast Ombre locks with this new, grown-up hair color palette.

Sombre1#Hair and #BeautyTrends of 2015 are all about looking natural and subtle, and SOMBRE is the perfect way to move into this new trend – a beauty trend which demands a lot more skill and artistic talent to achieve! Where Ombre locks dominated the beauty scene with their bold hair colors, and no-apologies-here contrasts in tone, SOMBRE uses these tones as a base, but takes them down several notches.

gallery_big_blonde_balayage_hair_color-300x262IN 2015 beauty, your face has to look clean and simple – nude lips, subtle eyes and perfect, flawless skin tones.  SOMBRE  hair works with your new, pale makeup palette. It is a more mysterious look  than Ombre, created with subtle “hand painting” of #haircolor called #Balayage , to the hair around the face to kick your skin’s color and texture to luminous.  But natural does NOT mean boring.  There is a a very gradual ascent from these muted tones into a brighter shade of whatever your natural hair color is. That’s right – thanks to this subtle and more polished look it’s equally suited for redheads, blondes and brunettes.  However, buyer beware – just because Sombre is less bold, it does not mean it is easier to do.

Now more than ever you need a great hair colorist who is an artist at placing those perfect

#highlights around your face. This is where your #haircolorist needs to have #Artistic Skills to bring your “Hair Color to an Art Form.” Your #colorist needs to understand tones and how they work with your skin color. Your colorist needs to be able to fade colors subtly without allowing them to lose their kick, their vibrance and their touchable quality. Subtle does NOT mean shabby, or boring or – worst of all – something you can do at home!!!! NO!

Self described perfectionist, Beverly Hills  Master hair colorist CalMartini  using BethCal Head shot Minardi Signature Shades, has toned and colored many a demanding celebrity head and warns that this new technique requires all of his expertise to give a subtle, eye catching look to the hair, without turning his client’s skin tones green or ashen. Cal Martini always brings haircolor to an “Art Form”. Last year’s Ombre hair was all about the hair.  This year’s Sombre hair color is #AllAboutYou . So make sure it makes YOU #yourBESTyou ! #TurnHeads
If it doesn’t make you look better than natural, then it hasn’t been done correctly.

Tangerine Dream zig-zag highlithts, redhead highlights, redheadsGorgeous red hair is always in vogue. Red hair can be a bit more of a challenge in maintaining the depth & vibrance of the red tones, however the results are worth it! No other hair color sizzles and makes a statement like red hair ! Over time even natural redheads have

to work to keep their hair color spicy and vibrant. They might be born with gorgeous red hair color but they will find that their natural red tones fade and start to look dull, due to stresses like sun, age of hair, too strong a shampoo, or chlorinated water from swimming pools.

Red hair color is notorious for looking fake. Just one shade off and the tint can scream “I came out of a bottle!!” But Beth Minardi Signature Shades offer a wide range of superb, sizzling, tantalizing, natural-looking choices for red-heads to spice up and make their red hair color pop. If your red hair is fading to dull gold, one great way to spice things up is by adding some delicious deeper tones of red to the hair and using the already faded golden red blonde as the highlights. By using Beth Mindardi’s Signature Shades, demi – permanent color line, less stress and less oxidation is put on the hair. Beth Minardi, a leading hair colorist in N.Y.C. use’s a mixture of two shades of her Beth Minardi’s Signature Shades – “Pacific Sunset” and “Cornsilk”, creating depth and dimension to the hair color.

Cal Martini a leading hair colorist in Beverly Hills, takes hair color to an art form, by pairing The Beth Minardi Signature Shades with one of her signature hair coloring techniques, like American Balayage. This innovative cutting edge hair color technique of applying hair color creates the glory of young, healthy, gorgeous red hair by introducing multiple hues of red color into the hair, making the red hair color so much better than natural! (For Cal Martini & Beth Minardi, creating gorgeous natural looking redheads is a specialty!) American Balayage hair color technique is done by foiling on a zig-zag partings. The zig-zag partings create a more natural look because they help the colorist work with the shape of the head, customizing the hair color results to the client. The color fades in and out of each strand so that you don’t end up with that “stitched” look at the hair parting, that you get with a typical hi-lighting foil job. Once the Spicy red shadow lights are painted in then shampooed and conditioned – (we,

case we are using Beth Minardi Signature Shades Demi Liquid “Peach Chiffon, restoring the brilliance of those faded dull red-gold natural pieces we used as highlights. Beth Minardi Signature Shades, Demi Acid Liquid Color, in addition to boosting the red hue, makes the hair incredibly shimmering and silky soft, which is why it is the perfect finishing touch to any single or multi-process hair color service. Beth Minardi Signature Shades features advanced technology in its formulation, Phyoto-Collagen which is a botanical protein that supports the hair’s protein structure, and Ceramide 2 – a bio-identical lipid that replenishes the depleted lipids in the hair due to environmental and chemical stress.

Do not forget; “hair color is like make-up you don’t take off” you want your hair color to look stunning every day, not just when you leave the salon. And as you can see, the American Balayage technique, using Beth Minardi Signature Shades, creates a sexy vivid sun kissed tangerine hair color which “POP’S” creating a real show stopper.Red zig-zag highlights

Best Hair Colorist Beverly Hills – new trends!

Cal Martini Color Group The best hair colorists understand that the “Beverly Hills” look is the result of both great hair color products and great hair color technique. Current hair color trends are always changing. And since so many of these changes result from the newest technologies in hair color products, the great hair colorists stay up-to-date on the latest products as well as the latest hair color techniques. American BalayageSome of my favorite new trends in hair color include Balayage and American Balayage. (American Balayage a technique created by Beth Minardi, legendary colorist) Now, I should explain that traditional balayage is actually not new, it is a technique imported from Paris, where they have been using it for several years. The new technique, in the right hands, is a joy to behold. Traditional Balayage is lightener painted directly on the hair. The product lies on the hair and there is a bleed over to other hairs which creates a softer but not distinct definition between light and dark. American Balayage has more definition to it, a bit more modern. One very big reason why quality of both the colorist and the product he or she uses is so important. The best colorist – one who is really good with balayage will use just a brush and a paddle as a canvas, on which to paint the hair.  It looks easy, and many stylists try this without American Balayagehaving any formal training in it. But this technique is more advanced than those they usually teach at a beauty school. This is why it is very important that a colorist have specific training. The best colorists for this kind of technique will have experience, taste and be up on all of the cutting edge hair color trends. When you have a stylist laying lightener directly on your hair without the safety of a foil you definitely want them to know what they are doing. You don’t want to have to go to some other colorist in Beverly Hills to fix a botched job. Get it right The end result of a great balayage is that bright, sun kissed look that is so popular now. Best of all, the highlights grow out looking natural and pretty. There is no harsh line between the lightened and non-lightened hair as with traditional foil techniques; the highlights are far more subtle. Right now the Boho trend is huge and there is nothing soft or beachy looking about a visible line where your stripes of highlights stop and you re-growth starts. Balayage is actually economical because that you don’t have to go to the salon every 4- 6 weeks in order to remain looking great!

Beth Minardi Signature Shades

Beth Minardi Logo

If you want great results in hair color you need a great colorist like Cal Martini of Beverly Hills, using a great hair color product like Beth Minardi Signature Shades.  So often we Beth Minardi Signature Shades
think it is all about having someone apply the color, or choosing the most flattering shade of color for your hair, or getting highlights or Ombre hair color technique.  Indeed these are all important elements.  But just like cooking something delicious requires both an excellent cook and high quality ingredients, so does coloring your hair.  If your hair colorist does not use the new hair technologies, the highest quality hair color line then your hair and your hair color is missing out!

The legendary Beth Minardi created her cutting edge Beth Minardi Signature Shades line “…out of a desire to make hair color better, more beautiful, more easily controlled, and more easily created by the professional colorist for any client”. As a colorist herself, she created her line, knowing the challenges she faced over the years trying to not only create gorgeous hair color, but help her clients maintain that vibrant color in between visits.  She wanted more flexibility in how to lighten and deepen existing color.  She wanted hair to be at it’s healthiest every time color is applied, not just the first time.  The result was a line of products that “allows us to lighten or deepen the hair, turning out everything from very rich, cool color to softer neutrals to the brightest shades around.  “ And these rich, dimensional hues are over-the-top shiny and silky.  Best of all there is scientific proof that hair color clients who use the complete Beth Minardi Signature Shades color line – Minardi Luxury Color CareAND the Minardi Luxury Hair Color Care, hair gets stronger and healthier after each use.  It seems impossible, but it’s true.

When it comes to hair, nothing is more aging and unsexy than frizzy, dull, over-processed hair.  No new application of hair color will help it, and no hairstyle will conceal it – unless you simply cut your hair off.

If you are lucky enough to live near Beverly Hills, then you can get this incredible Cal working with BMSStechnology, expertly applied by master colorist Cal Martini.  Because Cal Martini was at one time a protege of Beth Minardi’s, Cal was one of the first colorists to debut this line of extraordinary hair color line.  When you wed a great hair colorist, using the latest techniques of application, with the most cutting edge hair color technologies, the results are ….SO MUCH better than natural!

Best brunette hair color Los Angeles – new trends!

The best brunette hair color is coming to Los Angeles!

Cal Martini Color Group

Many women have brown hair. Brown. As in boring. I should know, since I have brown hair. Many of us want to add a little excitement to our hair color without completely changing it. I know that’s my story. I can’t change my hair color – if I go blonde I look like a negative, if I go darker, it ages me. And <sigh> I am just not in the mood to be a redhead today.

The problem with single-process color is the mistaken idea that you can get exciting, rich dimensional color out of a box. Even your average hair colorist will think – “ok, brown, let’s just change the tone, or shade of brown we are applying here and mission accomplished!” But the problem is that any single process job, no matter how pretty the shade you or your colorist chooses, still leaves you with a head of hair on which every single strand is exactly the same color. It may be a prettier color, but it is still one color. No single process color can be as dimensional as hair color that has several different shades woven together.

The best hair color products for brunettes  are where a great colorist will begin. But any hair color product is much enhanced by how it is applied. No one box or tube of hair color can give you the same kind of dimension and excitement you get by incorporating several shades, or tones, of a color. So what is a girl to do?

Ask your colorist for Shade-on-Shade Multi Dimensional hair color! Also known as Tone-on-Tone Multi Dimensional hair color, this is one of the hottest new hair color techniques trends on the red carpet. This is what we are seeing on famous and fashionable heads from Beverly Hills to New York. The best colorists, up on the most cutting edge trends in color, are creating subtle shifts in color, giving their clients hair that is layered with shades in soft sexy ranges of color like maple sugar, chocolate, cognac and caramel, so that your hair looks fuller, richer and more touchable than any bleaching could ever do. Unlike some trends in hair color, which will come and go, this method of application is so subtle, so elegant, so flexible and easy to tailor to perfection to enhance a woman’s skin tone, that it is here to stay.

How is it done? I watched as master colorist Cal Martini of Beverly Hills mixed up no Rebecca with foilsless than five pots of hair color in a range of pretty shades of brown – warm tones or cool tones – which he then applied to my hair, using foil to keep each tiny section from bleeding on to the others. I looked like an extra in Apocalypto by the time he finished adding foils to my hair.

And an hour later, I looked like a million dollars. Seriously. Gone was boring brown, what I had now was shiny brunetteRebecca after S.O.S hair with subtle highlights. No streaks, just subtle variations in tone that made my hair look thicker and my skin look translucent. Since this process is so subtle I look like one of those incredibly lucky people born with great hair.

So that’s how they do it!

Shade on Shade Color – only at Cal Martini Color Group The hottest hair color trends in 2014, as they have been in the past few years are most often inspired by the cutting edge techniques created by the great stylists – hair color trends like ombre hair, which was all the rage in 2012 & 2013.  Every year these artists create new ways to add dimension to hair color.  So in the past few years we have seen the biggest hair trends to be not so much in hair color but in hair color techniques.  We’ve seen dip-dyed hair and we’ve seen color blocks.  The ability to add multiple colors to a head of hair, to use ever more shiny and color-rich technologies, and to create movement, dimension and color fuels this trend.  So staying on top of the latest technologies is just as important as staying on to the hair trends. One of the hottest trends of 2012 was ombre hair color.  The idea that hair color could transform up and down the hair shaft was a breakthrough that allowed for incredible movement and dimension in hair.  Even on a cloudy day brown hair could look sun-kissed and shiny.  Which is why in 2014 ombre hair is not as popular as before. But the hair industry never sits still!  The hottest trend in hair color 2014 was just debuted by Cal Martini of Cal Martini Color Group in Beverly Hills California. Cal Martini is a master hair colorist / hair artist who has been working closely with famed hair colorist Beth Minardi as she developed her break-through hair color line, Beth Minardi Signature Shades and the Shade-on-Shade application technique.  Designing this technique of color application to perfectly compliment this hot new hair color product, Beth Minardi came up with the Shade-On Shade color technique of mixing four to six different but complimentary shades of hair color, each just a little different from the other, this tone-on-tone technique is painstakingly painted onto tiny sections of hair.. Cal, utilizes both Beth Minardi Signature hair color and her Shade-on Shade techniques working with both the style of cut and the type of hair to achieve the most gorgeous dimensional results in color. Shade on Shade This process is painstaking but well worth the time. Tone on tone is a brand new way to get rich dimensional color, subtle shading and hair color that looks better than natures! Shade On Shade The Beth Minardi Signature Shades line is the newest in hair color technology. Shade-on Shade color is the newest technique of hair color, designed to compliment this fantastic product line and make your hair look outrageously great. color swatchsInspired by working with Beth Minardi, Cal Martini is constantly exploring new ways to exploit the breathtaking color and shine you get from Beth Minardi Signature Shades hair line. Shade on Shade color will be just the first of many exciting trends that will be right there at 421 North Rodeo Drive in the Cal Martini Color Group.

Most women believe that they will get the best hair color results  in salons in Beverly Hills or New York, because these are the cities that attract the best and most talented colorists, and although I do agree , I also know that the city does not guarantee quality, the salon does.  Great colorists combine knowledge and expertise, and because they are in the business, they also get the low-down on the most cutting edge products and processes.  In addition color results in Beverly Hills and New York will be among the best because these are the US cities where cutting edge fashion rules.  So not only does this result in the best hair color and the best hair color application, you also have access to what is in style now.  The result is that you have ombre locks while others are still applying cellophanes.  You have access to colorists who suggest multiple shades of layered color while elsewhere women just like you are still getting yesterday’s style of streaks n’ tips (well, actually I hope that is not true, no-one should be getting THAT kind of horrible advice except maybe the woman that is trying to steal your man. Cal working with BMSSSo let’s start with knowledge of product.  There are new products coming on the market all of the time, and stylists know better than to just rush out and get whatever is hot without carefully vetting each and every color, down to the smallest details.  For example The Cal Martini Color Group Salon is about to launch a new line of hair color created by the queen of hair color, Beth Minardi. Despite the fact that Cal has worked with her for years, despite the fact that he has been in the know right from the beginning about this line, staying up to date on it’s development and studying it so he can school his own stylists.  Despite the fact that he knows how beautifully it goes on, and despite the many properties it has that make it a cut above even the best of previous hair color product lines, he has tested out each and every shade of the new color line in-house, to make sure he can accurately predict how it will work on an individual client’s head of hair. You do your homework, use your expertise and the result is one gorgeous head of hair after another

BEST HAIR COLOR RESULTS BEVERLY HILLS

I’ve recently been blogging about what gives you the best hair color results  whether you live in a major fashion center like Beverly Hills or a smaller city or town.  We may not all want to live in larger cities, but who doesn’t want to look his or her best?  So last blog I spoke about knowledge of product, and how colorists are not only familiar with the new products, but train to work on them.  And the best colorists test each and every hair color line – color by color, so that they know from first-hand experience how these color lines perform, BEFORE they do a person’s entire head.   I know because before my own colorist, Cal Martini, used a brand new color line on my head – a color line he has been familiar with from the first stages of development, – he tested it out on a tiny hidden lock of my hair, making sure it was a perfect match to the color he had been using previously..

So knowing what products are even out there and which ones are the best is the kind of knowledge you can depend upon your hair colorist to know.  Staying up on the most cutting edge products is their job.  And finally, knowing exactly how these products perform, so they can use them to your best advantage, is also their job.

So what are the products out there?  Scan the boxes in your drugstore and you see a lot of the same brands – L’Oreal, Revlon, Garnier, Wella with multiple kinds of product.  If you go to the beauty supply store you will see these same brands, but not as packaged at-home dyes. These are the professional lines that these brands offer.  Hair color crèmes are in tubes, and the thinner dyes are in small twist-top bottles, for multiple uses.  You mix them with whatever volume of developer you need (more on that later – choosing the right volume of developer is practically it’s own blog!) and apply.  But you are still not seeing the best brands for the best hair color results.

If you go to a professional beauty supply store, the kind that requires you have a license as a beautician/stylist/color professional, you will see some additional brands like Schwarzkopf, Elgon, Matrix, Redken and Goldwell.  Now we are getting somewhere.  These are brands with a difference – the colors are rich, they stay put, and they offer a huge range of color variation, so you have a much better chance at finding the right color for you.   Joico and Goldwell in particular have been the gold standard in professional hair color for many years.  And yet not all salons include those two brands. Why? Because these hair color lines are more expensive.   They are also a significantly better product, giving you significantly better hair color results.

Beth Minardi Signature ShadesUntil now, I would have told you to make sure your salon carries one of those two color lines, because the brand of color matters so much in the outcome of any color process.  But there is a new kid in town.  Not new to the hair color industry, just a brand new, cutting edge hair color line.  A line of hair color that is truly revolutionary.    Created by a colorist who has been working on the most beautiful heads in the world and with leading manufactures of hair color.

It is the only hair color line that exists that fades on color.  Meaning that if does not fade and turn greenish or orangey or a hard (and fake) looking gold.  It fades true to the color you chose.  So when you refresh your color you are doing it because it has re-growth and slightly faded, not because it is looking weird and you need to refresh so that people don’t suspect you color your hair.

And what is this amazing new cutting-edge color line?

Most of us do not have the patience to grow our hair very long.  However, if you are one of the few who do, then you also know that styling long hair can be a real pain.  You cannot over stress your long hair or you will end up having to cut it off.  Which is why many women who do grow their hair long end up wearing it in a bun most of the time. But what is the point of having it if you can’t show it off?  So instead of hurting your lovely long hair with curling irons and flatirons, or hiding it in a simple bun, you need to find hairstyles that both show your hair to its best advantage and don’t require heat and other forms of hair torture.  This year the hot look for longer hair is The Fishbone, Fishtail or Herringbone Braid.

Unlike the pigtails and braids of our childhood, the fishbone braid is a stylish and sophisticated look.  One of the great things about this very pretty and unusual braid is how versatile it is.  You can choose to pull all of your hair into one long tight braid, you can do two braids for a cute pigtailed look or you can use the braid as an elegant finish for any number of up-dos.  You can wear it tightly plaited or more loosely woven.  However you decide to style your hair, this complicated-looking braid adds a touch of the unusual, and more than a little touch of elegance to your look.  It is popping up on the red carpet everywhere this year, and getting a lot of attention.  If you want to know how to do it, click here for more detailed instructions on the basics of the fishbone, fishtail or herringbone braid)

For example, one braided hairdo that is currently a hit on the red carpets is the side

side fishtail braid, Ashley Greene

fishtail braid, as in this picture of Ashley Greene in her loose fishtail braids. Sexy and tousled and yes still elegant at the same time.

A very different application of the fishtail braid is in the very pretty updo sported by Diana Agron. Here, instead of the usual French braid, she opted for the Fishbone, giving a fairly standard

Dianna Agron's Fishbone Braid-Accented Updo

up-do a unique twist.

This is actually one of the few Herringbone braid styles that do not require particularly long hair, since you are braiding along the crown of the head – even shoulder-length hair is long enough! And as you can see, it is an elegant, upscale way to wear your hair.

To duplicate her look, just separate out a three-inch band of hair along the hairline at the forehead, going from ear to ear. This is the section you are going to braid, starting above one ear.

For women with longer hair, a classic way to wear the fishbone or herringbone braid is

Herringbone braid styles

shown here, where it is more of a casual and beachy look, pulling all of the hair off the face, and creating a particularly lovely profile. One reason I mention that it takes long hair to do this braid is that it has to be at least long enough for a decent ponytail, as that is what you start weaving from in this particular hairstyle.

However my absolute favorite fishbone or herringbone braid look is this one, where colorfully dipdyed locks is woven together in a lovely braid. Whether you choose one accent color (for example Rhianna usually chooses red) or several, the bright colors accent the braid brilliantly, and the braid enhances the look of the colors in your hair, making this a particularly great style for 2012.

The Fishbone or Herringbone Braid

Some call it the Fishbone Braid, others refer to it as the Herringbone Braid – some even Fishbone braidscall it the Fishtail Braid.  Despite the ugly names this is a very pretty, very striking hair style.  Although the braid is a very specific kind, there are many ways to wear your hair, incorporating this unusual-looking braiding.  So you can approach the look in an ultra-casual way, with Herringbone Braidtextured, slightly messy hair, and pair it with jeans and a silky top, or go upscale with smooth, shiny hair tightly braided and worn in an up-do.  Paired with a white dress and veil it is a gorgeous look for your wedding day! There are just so many pretty ways to dress your hair using the fishbone, fishtail or herringbone braid, and all of them have a touch of elegance.

How to do The Fishbone, Fishtail or Herringbone Braid

This is a great look for women with long hair.  It is easiest to create with coarser hair, so for women of color, this is a particularly successful braid because your natural hair texture is perfect for the complicated looking weave of this braid, and perfect for creating many of the up-do’s that look so elegant with this braid.  If you have smooth slippery hair I suggest that you use hair products like Minardi Luxury Hair Care’s “Finish Flexible Finishing Spray”

Minardi Luxury Hair Care’s “Finish Flexible Finishing Spray”

to add texture to your hair first, to help you get the right outcome.  It may take first-timers a few tries to get the weaving just right.  It is a simple braid but it takes a certain amount of dexterity to manage the many sections of hair you are weaving at the same time.

Before you Begin

It is important to remember to do your best to separate your hair into even sections so that the braid is balanced-looking.  Once you get the hang of the braid itself you can have a lot of fun creating your different looks

Step 1

Decide on the kind of Herringbone braid you want – loose and messy or tight and neat.  Do you want the braid to be loose and casual and your hair to be full and textured, with a lot of loose tendrils?  Or do you want the braid to be smooth and woven tightly before you either drop it over a shoulder or wind it around your head?  Are you going to weave all of your hair into the braid or are you going to braid some of the hair and leave the rest down?

Step 2

Prepare your hair! No matter how you decide to approach the style, make sure your hair is clean and tangle-free.  Decide on the right hair product to use to give you the best results.  If you are new to this, or you want to give this look a casual/sexy feel, then use hair product so that the act of braiding your hair is easier, and so that the braid itself is thick and lustrous when you are finished.  However, if you want a

Minardi Luxury Hair Care "SUBDUE"- Frizz retraining styling creme

very tight fishbone braid, you want to make sure your hair is smooth and shiny, so use a smoothing cream such as “Subdue” by Minardi Luxury Hair Care to smooth the hair before braiding.

Step 3

Part your hair straight down the middle from forehead to neck and divide your hair into two large sections. Beginning on the right side of your part at your forehead, twist a one-inch section of hair away from your face.

Step 4

Use a comb to separate a 1/2-inch section right below the first section along your face and twist that piece away from your face, combining it with the first piece.

Step 5

Continue adding these approximately 1/2-inch pieces along your hairline down to your neck. Use clips or to hold the hair in place at the nape of your neck..

Step 6,7,8

Do the exact same thing on the left side, starting at your forehead – start by selecting a one inch piece of hair and then twist it away from your face, continuing with the 1/2 inch sections, twisting and combining with the upper pieces.

Step 9

When you reach the nape of the neck, unclip the right side and hold both the left and right sides in two separate sections.

Pull a 1/2-inch section of hair from the right section and add it to the left section. Repeat with a piece from the left section, adding it to the right section.

Step 10

Continue adding 1/2-inch pieces down to the ends and secure with an elastic.

Note that you can use smaller sections of hair than 1/2 inch. In fact the skinnier the strands, the more intricate your braid.  It takes more effort but it looks the most effective.  In general, try to use the same thickness for each strand throughout or your braid will look uneven. For a beginner, pulling it tighter helps you to learn the method properly.

The fishtail braid can be as neat or as messy as you’d like, depending on the occasion.  Weaving the fishtail braid while your hair is wet will give you a firmer grip, creating a more precise braid. However texturizing it with product like a mix of Minardi’s “Subdue” and Minardi’s “Gel Cocktail”  is another way to get more traction while weaving these pieces of your hair.

Minardi Luxury Hair Care "Gel-Cocktail"

By the way, if you currently have dip-dyed your long hair, this is a great look for your hair.  The woven colors will make this intricate-looking braid even more exciting!

Best Hair colorist Beverly Hills – seeing red

Red is one of those hair colors that everyone wants to try but traditionally it has been a very difficult color to wear well.  Even with the best hair colorist applying color, it can be challenging to maintain because it fades very easily.  It is also a tough color to really get right, because too often not so great hair stylists tend to make it too carroty or too violet. Even worse is the disaster of do-it-yourself hair color that leaves your hair purple or pink.  However new technologies in hair color, new formulas, new techniques for application, and new products for hair care, have combined to offer us a second chance at being a red hot red-head.

The best hair colorists, inspired by Beverly Hills celebrities who love a fresh look, have found ways to layer colors together, offering dimensional color in every shade of red, from light honeyed reds mixed with golden tones to deeper hues flashing with copper.  It’s all in the technique and the taste of the hair colorist.

So here are a few ideas to take to your favorite hair colorist, next time you are thinking about going red.  And by the way, red is so many shades now – from the most delicate strawberry blonde to the deepest mahogany auburn.  By using combinations of highlights and lowlights you can find that perfect balance of warmth and depth for you

Celebrities who have decided to change up their color for the fall include beauties like

Bella Thorn

Bella Thorn, who avoids any hit of the dreaded “carroty red” with light golden red tones woven with deeper russet lowlights.  The result is a light and lovely red that is dimensional and filled with light.

Alyson Hannigan

Alyson Hannigan’s Irish beauty is the best foil for a strong red, and her Beverly Hills hair colorist does her hair with a blue-based garnet shade tempered with strawberry-blonde highlights.

And if we are talking about stunning red-headed actors we cannot skip Julianne Moore, who’s signature gold-based red

Julianne Moore

has been emulated by fans everywhere.  The secret to her warm hair color is again, just the right mix of red and gold.

A much stronger statement in color is Ellie Kemper’s dark,

Ellie Kemper

almost maroon roots which her hair colorist combined with slightly ombre’d tips.  The overall effect is both glamorous and stylish.

Beverly Hills celebrity hair colorist Cal Martini is known in particular for his gorgeous reds, something the timelessly beautiful Rene Russo discovered early on.

Every year the fashion headlines scream that some hair color is in vogue.  The truth is, all colors are in vogue all of the time (how could anything else be possible??)  The best hair colorists in Beverly Hills and anywhere else, are always keeping ahead of the trends, in fact they are creating them. Keeping your look fresh is all about the technique for applying color, and they just get better and better.  If you have a great colorist you can have great hair.

Best Hair colorist Beverly Hills – going blonde

Blonde hair never seems to go out of style and in 2012 there are so many new ways to achieve a blonde look!  This spring and summer, the best bevy of golden hues incorporates a range of trendy touches, from subtle highlights to brassy roots.

Celebrities have access to the best hair colorists in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, but don’t despair.  You can be inspired by these incredible hair color experts and benefit from their artistry.  Just collect pictures of your favorite looks and bring them in to your own favorite hair colorist and stylist.  Discuss with your colorist how to get the right tones for your skin color, and the kind of effect you think this look will create.  If your hair colorist is up on the latest techniques and the latest technologies available in hair coloring, then they will be able to re-create your favorite celebrity look.  Below are some blonde inspirations.

Reese Witherspoon

Here is an example of the 2012 blonde.  Dark roots, sun-kissed ends and medium-blonde lowlights in between.  Reese Witherspoon is a flaxen blonde, but she decided to add something new to her classic look.

Madonna has long since backed away from her Marilyn wanna-be peroxided locks.   She is savvy enough to understand that those extremely ashy tones combined with the inevitable damage to the hair shaft would only make her look old now.

Madonna

So instead, her 2012 blonde look includes buttery blonde highlights and darker reddish lowlights to keep her color dimensional, and create the illusion of lots of hair.

Emma Stone loves changing her hair color and she certainly has committed to the look with all-over, warmer-

Emma Stone

than-usual ash blonde Her delicate coloring make her a perfect candidate for this flaxen shade.

Joan Rivers is best known for comedy, and her cheeky attitude never goes out of style.  However she also cares tremendously about maintaining a fresh, youthful appearance and here she has a classic bob that has been dyed a delicate ash with slightly darker tones to the roots. For added fun she’s streaked in a subtle shade of cotton

candy pink.  It is a tribute to her hair colorist – from Beverly Hills of course – that I can even write that phrase “a subtle shade of cotton candy pink” with a straight face!  But somehow under his expert care her hot pink highlights are indeed subtle and tasteful. They certainly go well with the fur coat.

Discuss with your own favorite stylist the best shades of blonde for your skin tone.  Decide if you want to be an all-over blonde or a streaky blond with dark roots.  There are so many different techniques available these days to color your hair!  Have some FUN!

Hairstyle Makeover Transformation

You just broke up with your sweetie: you are looking for a new job: you are in a rut: you have worn the same hairstyle since 1992: you want to change your life!

Sometimes you need to make a change, and a hairstyle makeover or a transformation in your hair color is a great place to begin.  And I am not just talking to women here – plenty of you guys should really consider changing up your look – particularly if you have never given it much thought (in fact, if that is the case I STRONGLY urge you to make a change).  You would be amazed at the kind of impact a makeover hairstyle could have on you, how it can transform your life.  Women are pretty smart, and there is a very good reason we do these things.  When you makeover your look – specifically your hair, you transform your attitude, which transforms your confidence, and that can be a life-changing experience.

Knowing you want to make a big change does not mean you know how to do it.  But if you have a great relationship with a very talented, experienced and tasteful hairstylist – one you are comfortable enough to truly express your likes and dislikes, then dare to say – “Go ahead – have at it – do what you will and make my hair look incredible!”  Seriously – take the plunge.  However, and this is very important, communicate as you go!

In other words, DO discuss what he or she might do.  Have a conversation about the length of the hair you might want, the texture you might want, what aspects of your lifestyle are important when it comes to taking too drastic a step (for example, if you work in a conservative office, do not let your stylist shave your head). Don’t be afraid to give ideas, express your dislikes or go against his or her suggestions.   It is your hair. You have seen it in its many incarnations; you know what looks good with your face and the persona you want to project.

At the same time you are asking for THEIR input for a very good reason – because you might always choose the same old look, or because they have knowledge of new techniques that might look great.  So while I am still suggesting that you step outside of your comfort zone here, and let your stylist go to town, cleaning you up and helping you create a new image, do it in a balanced way.  Be clear on what you don’t want, and also about what you have always loved.  Chat about your insecurities and chat about the possibilities for your hair – and then close your eyes, relax, and have some fun!

You don’t have to do anything drastic or permanent to get a big boost from your makeover.  But sometimes discovering how someone else envisions you is inspiring.  You can dip dye or do tone-on-tone color; you can have ombre color or lowlights or highlights or sparkle lights.  You can glaze, do semi-permanent or permanent dyes.

So ask your stylist about the possibilities that are out there for you.

And remember, there is no sense in doing something if you are not going to do it well. Make sure you have a great hairstylist, with whom you communicate well.  Make sure your stylist truly understands your particular hair issues. And then have some fun, take a chance, and transform yourself into the best possible you.

GET THE BEST RESULTS FROM YOUR SALON VISIT

When you go to the hair salon, get the best results  from your stylist – whether in Beverly Hills or Beacon Hill, by following a few simple rules.  First, and foremost, choose a great stylist.  Yes, pretty obvious, but since we are all impulse buyers at one time or another, it is worth mentioning that you don’t want to just go to just anyone.  Even in Beverly Hills – the Mecca for great hair and style – your hair can be ruined by someone with bad taste. You certainly don’t want to choose a stylist because they are cheap – that is the road to sure disaster.  Always choose someone because you love his or her work!

Once you choose a great stylist it is best for you to go in to your salon armed with a particular hair cut or style in mind.  If at all possible, have pictures of the style you are considering with you.  Pictures you have found in current magazines are best.  If you can only find the style in magazines from a couple of years ago please re-think your choice – you don’t want last year’s look on this years head!

You will always get the best results if you can show your hair stylist what you want, rather than just describe it, so that he or she has a very clear understanding of what you are looking for.  Because the second rule for success when you get your hair cut, colored or styled, is great communication with your stylist.

As all heads are NOT created equal, rule number three for the best results from your salon hairstylist is to make sure he or she already knows the particular foibles of your head of hair.  This is particularly important with a new stylist, but even if you have worked together for a while, don’t be shy – mention anything you think is going to be an issue.  Do you have cowlicks, are you prone to frizz, does your hair go flat within an hour, do you feel the need to hide your ears?  We all have something we are working around when it comes to fashion and our own personal look.  The best hairdressers simply know how to work with quirks, and the best salon clients are excellent communicators!

If your hair stylist is good, and has worked on your hair more than a couple of times, these are things they probably will take into account each time they work with your hair. This is just one reason I believe so strongly in forging a relationship with a great stylist and sticking to it – like the song says, “nobody does it better!” I’ve noticed that the longer my own Beverly Hills hair stylist and I work together, the better he makes my hair look.

Communicating the right color to your colorist is often particularly difficult because you need to choose a shade or tone based on both the effect you want to create and on your own particular coloring. And just like your haircut, you may not want to always stick to the same old look, the same old color formula. But again, particularly if you are getting several shades of hair color blended together for a rich, dimensional color, the process of finding the perfect shade can be a lot of fun and if you have an experienced and talented colorist, one who is up on the most current trends and hair color technologies, then you still look fabulous along the way. Your stylist can even try temporary color glazes out on you as you collaborate on your look.

Finding your best look; experimenting with your hair color or cut should not be traumatic. It should be fun! The absolutely worst thing you can do is be polite and not say anything if you don’t like a result. Your stylist truly cares that you are happy with your look. And the better you stylist gets to know you, your taste, your lifestyle – the better the chance you will be really happy with the outcome. So be bold and always speak your mind.

If you are struggling with your hair, confused over which hair products are going to make your own hair look its best, begin with the basics and find the best shampoo and conditioner  for your hair– the best for your look and the best shampoo for your hair type.  As Beverly Hills stylist Emma Sheahan, of Cal Martini Color Group says, “A great hair style begins with a great wash.”

This means NO drugstore shampoos. In fact, while we are on the subject, no drugstore conditioners, gels, mousses, pomades or hair oils. Never. Ever.  You only get one head of hair in this lifetime. Don’t ruin it.  Once I help you figure out the best quality shampoo for your hair type,  buy your shampoo and conditioner at top quality salons, where the sources of products are vetted and where if you are unhappy with the results, they care! Save yourself trouble and order from them online.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am a big fan of saving money, and I believe in only spending the big bucks where you need to.  I am always on the hunt for a great deal, and when, for example, I find a pair of $800.00 dollar shoes for under $100.00 I feel like I have found the meaning of life.

But just as Walmart shoes would ruin my personal style, drugstore brands will ruin my hair.  While the best shampoos and conditioner for your hair contain high quality plant extracts, essential fatty acids and other quality ingredients, that will make your hair shiny, manageable and youthful, drugstore brands contain cheap petroleum products that will age your hair and make your cut and color look cheap.  Even the “high end” shampoos, conditioners and styling products found in a drugstore are no bargain.  They might throw in a miniscule amount of whatever buzz-word ingredients are currently popular but they are mostly formulated with cheap, ingredients, that will first coat the hair, making it seem smooth and silky, and then betray you and ruin your hair by preventing any kind of nutrition to get into the hair shaft.  All too quickly your hair will get harder to comb out.  You will get more and more tangles.  Then it will get less manageable, and when you blow it dry – even using high-priced styling products, it won’t sit well on your head. It will get dry and start to frizz. It will just start to look wrong.

Don’t blame your hair, blame your shampoo and your conditioner!!

The best shampoos, the best conditioners for your hair type can be found at salons, and at certain, professional grade beauty supply stores.
