How Do You Find A Great Hair Color Specialist?

A truly great hair color specialist is many, many things. He or she is a person who is on the cutting edge of the new hair technologies, allowing them to suggest novel ways to use the hottest trends in hair. They are artists who look at your skin and your eyes as they talk to you about the perfect shade of color you want. They listen to you about your lifestyle, what you can and cannot get around to doing, so that they don’t suggest (for example) a very high maintenance color like red, to a person with a busy schedule that only allows for the occasional touch-up. And they don’t suggest a colorful dip-dye to a client who works in an environment that would frown on something so whimsical.

A great hair color specialist will listen to you about your life and style so that they guide you towards a color that fits with who you are and what you do. They work with your haircut so that the hair color process adds dimension to your hair cut. And they apply color like an artist so that you walk out of the salon looking like you have incredibly shiny, lovely hair – as opposed to looking like you have an amazing and expensive colorist.

How on earth do you find a truly great hair color specialist? In most cities, the best thing to do is to be constantly checking out the heads of hair you love. And when you can, accost them to find out who their hair colorist or hair stylist is. Most people are quite flattered at the question and ready to tell you.

Check out the salons that show you their transformations – customers before and after photos a treatment. That can tell you a lot about an individual stylist’s and hair colorist’s work.

That’s what I did. Because I live in LA, I decided to first find a great Beverly Hills hair salon,  as I know that the location itself is a good filter. You can’t survive on Rodeo Drive if you aren’t really good. But even in Beverly Hills you get a lot of colorists who are more interested in hair trends than finding what looks best on an individual’s head of hair. This is particularly true of large salons, where the stylist they trained with their standard techniques may or may not be a great stylist in his own right. So another filter for me is finding small salon’s that offer a personalized approach. I ultimately chose a colorist who had some incredible transformations right on his site where I could see them. Plus he has worked on some of my favorite celebrities – Renee Russo, specifically, and I have always loved her hair color and her overall very classy look. That is the kind of outcome I wanted with my hair.

So that is the method I used to find a great hair color specialist

And by the way, cutting pictures out of a magazine in an effort to show your hair colorist what you want is a great idea. But don’t just go into a salon with one picture – go in with several so that you can discuss why you like each picture – the more you communicate with your hair colorist the better, and when talking hair color, a picture is the only way to do it.

I have found that the transformation in my hair has affected everything about the way I look – my skin looks better, my hair is always very smooth and shiny so it makes me look younger and better groomed – even in sweats. Seriously. So do not underestimate the power of having great hair, and the power of having a great hair colorist and stylist helping you look your best. Just make having great hair, and great hair color part of your beauty destiny.
